Common Vegetables Fruits Milk Meat
"State & Development Prospects of Fruit & Vegetable Trade through Retail Chains of Ukraine in Comparison with Poland - 2011"

The study was conducted by PMR, Polish consulting company, by order of IFC Ukraine Fresh Produce Sector Development Project and gives a notion about the Ukrainian fresh vegetable market and supermarket chains' role in this market. The report examines main problems impeding the vegetable retail trade development, shows the sales volumes of major vegetables through retail chains, describes the possibilities for the sales increase and their predictable development, and provides the comparative analysis of the Ukrainian and Polish vegetable markets.

The study is based on 135 brief interviews of the distributors, wholesale companies, retailers and fruit and vegetable market specialists; 45 in-depth interviews of the market players (producers, representatives of retail chains and wholesale companies); 38 interviews of the Ukrainian major retail chains' category managers and purchasing managers; 8 in-depth interviews in Poland conducted with the aim of the comparative analysis; and data got from open sources of information.

The study consists of the following parts:

  • The overview of the economic situation in Ukraine, the factors to characterize the business development and dealing in the country.

  • The analysis of the fresh produce market in Ukraine: the production and sales volumes, market outlets, assortment, buying preferences. The detailed overview of the potato, onion, carrot and red beet markets.

  • The retail pricing for fresh vegetables in Ukraine. The regional pricing aspects.

  • The agricultural produce market structure in Ukraine: the structure of producers, wholesale markets, open retail markets and organized retail trade/supermarkets. The communication models between the market players.

  • The fresh produce quality issues in Ukraine: the requirements to fresh produce, in particular the organized trade and open markets' requirements. The factors to influence the quality of produce. The standardization policy.

  • Open retail markets versus supermarket retail chains: pros and cons regarding the fresh produce trade.

  • The main factors to favor and impede the development of the fruit and vegetable organized retail market in Ukraine: the market players and experts' opinions.

  • The overview of the Polish agricultural produce market, the production and sales volumes of major vegetables, the Polish retail peculiarities. The comparative analysis of the Polish and Ukrainian fruit and vegetable sectors.

The study contains 93 pages and is available in two languages: Russian and English.
