Fifth international conference "Fruits and Vegetables of Ukraine 2008"

Around 350-400 representatives of 15-20 countries are expected to take part in the conference.

The fifth anniversary conference "Fruits and Vegetables of Ukraine 2008" promises to have the largest scale in the history of its existence. Eight months before the event "Fruit-Inform" started to receive the application forms, because the conference has been already included to the working schedules of all largest companies of the industry: the producers and processors, the wholesale companies, suppliers of the inputs and equipments, and the supermarket chains. Actually "Fruits and Vegetables of Ukraine" is an internationally recognized brand of the annual specialized high-level forums for the leaders of fruit & vegetable business; this is the largest specialized event in Eastern Europe.

Of course, according to our tradition we are going to offer several novelties to the participants of the event this year. Such novelty is the second international "Nuts Business of Ukraine 2008" conference which starts working just after the end of "Fruits and Vegetables of Ukraine 2008" conference on the 4th of December. If the participants are willing to take part in two events at once, they will be able to save time and money for the travel to Kyiv; their participation fee will also be discounted. The additional advantage for the nut producers will be the opportunity to order the stand on the exhibition. Also, nut growers will learn about the elements of the intensive production technologies presented on the fruit & vegetable exhibition.

"Fruits and Vegetables of Ukraine 2007" conference gathered around 350 professionals from 14 countries in 2007. At once five companies sponsored the conference. The recognized international company "Netafim-Ukraine" was the general sponsor of the conference; again, this company has already expressed its desire to support the event as the general sponsor in 2008. The companies "Olvita", "Shuvar", "Unifer", and "Phytomag" sponsored the conference too.

Traditionally, the large and medium producers were the largest audience on the conference; there were also relatively small farms which grow niche crops. Almost all leading producers of vegetables and fruits of Ukraine participated in the event 2007. If the quantity is estimated, the share of the producers increased from 42% in 2006 up to 51% in 2007; the number of the producers significantly increased. If we estimate the acreage of the cultivation areas, managed by the participating producers, the increase has exceeded 100% since the previous year.

The structure of the participants of "Fruits and Vegetables of Ukraine 2007" (fig. 1) mirrors a broad interest of all fruit & vegetable business segments to the event, and also proves the topicality of the discussed issues.

The share of the representatives of the trade structures also increased up to 14% of the total quantity of the delegates in 2007. It is worth to highlight the increased interest of Russian wholesale and retail companies to Ukrainian market; they were represented either directly or by their Ukrainian colleagues on the conference. The suppliers of the inputs and equipment, and also the service companies, which work in fruit & vegetable business, also show the steadily high interest to the event. They are represented by the same 13% of the conference participants. We would also like to point out the increased number of the processors - participants of the conference; this fact is explained by more severe competition on market and also by the improved organizational level of the processing enterprises and their need for the strategic planning of the activities. Traditionally, the conference enjoys a wide coverage in the specialized and branch industry mass media, and also in the business periodicals; the press-conference materials are broadcasted by several central Ukrainian TV channels.

We'd like to point out that the owners and top managers of the large enterprises mostly participate in the conference. The foreign companies were mostly represented by the suppliers of inputs and equipment, and also the trade enterprises and the large producers on the conference. Also, the recognized international experts took part in the event.

It is our strict rule that at our conferences we provide only exclusive and up-to-date information!

This year we plan to pay special attention to the question of the impact of Ukraine's entrance to WTO for the fruit and vegetable market of the country. What does it mean for fruit and vegetable producers? How to adjust own business to the more intensive competition? The production of which fruits and vegetables is likely to be affected because of Ukraine's entrance to WTO? Or, to the contrary, what fruits and vegetables will benefit, and why? How will Ukraine's entrance to WTO change the buyers' requirements to the quality and packing of fresh fruits and vegetables? What should the processors expect? All these questions will be included to the conference program. Ukrainian and international experts will conduct the special surveys in order to prepare the most profound answers to these questions.

We'd like to point out that the decreased import tariff rates for fruits and vegetables, initiated by Ukraine, have resulted in the sharply increased interest of the foreign suppliers to Ukrainian market. In this regard we expect the increased number of the foreign suppliers to participate in the conference 2008. The wholesale-retail trade forum was a real success in 2007, so we plan to increase its efficiency and the number of the forum participants in 2008.

Of course, the issues of the technologies of the production, post harvest handling, packing and marketing of fruits and vegetables will be in focus of attention as well. We will speak about the technologies from the point of view of the marketing this year; in other words, we will discuss whether the technologic improvements let the producers have advantages on market, and we'll speak on the implementation of these improvements. Please find the detailed program of the conference here.
