About the conference

The Second International Conference-Exhibition “Berries of Ukraine-2011: Freezing and Fresh Market” is to take place in Lvov, Ukraine, May 19-20, 2011. The event was organized by Fruit-Inform Project and Shuvar wholesale market.

Ukraine is a major exporter of frozen wild berries, primarily blueberries. At the same time, Ukraine imports more and more such traditional berries as, for example, frozen cherries. Moreover, berry production is one of the most profitable and high-marginal kinds of agrarian business as berries belong to almost the only fruit segment in the world with the growing demand.

There is a great number of investment opportunities in growing, freezing, and export of berries from Ukraine which can be of the highest interest for international investors as this produce can be exported not only to Russia, but to the EU countries as well. For example, relatively small Serbia has the export value of only raspberries being at the level of $300 mil annually.

Fresh market has the same interesting opportunities. Ukraine can successfully sell strawberries not only to the domestic market, but as well export them to the Russian Federation where Ukrainian exporters have the advantage of 3-4 weeks against local suppliers, and prices are always 30-50% higher.

Fruit-Inform Project is to complete the first fundamental study “Market for Frozen Fruits and Vegetables of Ukraine and Russia-2011” till the beginning of the conference. Some of the results of this study will be presented during the event.

The following urgent questions will be given coverage in the course of the conference:

• Investment attractiveness of integrated projects on growing and freezing of berries (raspberries, sour cherries, garden strawberries, chokeberries, blackberries, bilberries, blueberries etc.) and return-on-investment assessment.

• Other countries' experience in growing and export of fresh and frozen berries, particularly experience of Poland and Serbia.

• Forecast of further developments in the berry market of Ukraine and Russia in 2011 and assessment of the market size, state, and prospects.

• Ukraine's fresh and frozen berry producers rating.

The first conference was visited by more than 150 delegates from eight countries of the world (Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, Poland, Israel, Germany, France, Italy), 44% of whom were producers of berries.

Thanks to business-meetings during the first conference, Ukraine managed to increase significantly exports of fresh sweet cherries, and participants, according to them, got a great number of new ideas and contacts, helpful for the further development of their business. This year we will try to make the event even more interesting and informative.
